Wales and the Marches

Dear Margaret, I tried to find some photos of you on this trip, but could only find photos of things we saw together, apart from one where you're so far away it's hard to tell it's you. It was a lovely house-hunting trip when we were both thinking of moving away from Saffron Walden. We stayed in an air B&B in Monmouth, where you had thoughtfully brought a Charlie Bigham fish pie to share, only to discover it wasn't microwaveable and we didn't have an oven. Nothing daunted, you cooked it on the hob in a frying pan, and it tasted just as good! I have some lovely photos of our early morning foray up the Kymin, when we stopped the car to marvel at the magical effects of light on mist, and looked over the rail high on the Kymin into a well of cloud. You patiently drove me around Ross and Ledbury, with a pile of estate agents' house particulars, and we even came to Abergavenny, where you disappeared upstairs in the Tourist information centre to look at a tapestry history of the town while I quizzed the elderly ladies about markets and bus services. We stayed one night in a house surrounded by beautiful Herefordshire forest, just turning all shades of yellow and orange and I took pictures of the house animals - a huge dog, and two cats, which joined us in bed in the morning. That's where the picture of you was taken. You had already seen that Colvase House was for sale, although you hadn't put in an offer on it yet. We both put our houses on the market when we got back, but you sold and moved while I took mine off the market for another couple of years, before eventually finding a house in Abergavenny, post-covid. What fun it was, and what a happy memory...
